Why the fifth floor?

Many great conversations took place on the fifth floor of Cabell at the University of Virginia. As early-stage graduate students, we spent a lot of time in our offices and around the Sociology department. We were over-worked, enthusiastic, and critically engaged. This, and coffee, fueled the conversation. The topics varied, though current events dominated nothing was off limits.

The fifth floor is no longer the Sociology Department, even if it was it would not be the same. Life moves on. The dynamic changes. We are all at different stages in life, grad school, and our careers.  But, we all remember those long days on the fifth floor fondly.

This blog is an attempt to recreate our experiences of the fifth floor–a place to discuss current events, test out new ideas, critically engage the world around us, and occasionally let loose.
